Understanding BS6 Emission Standards and Your Bike’s Exhaust

BS6 (Bharat Stage 6) is the current Indian emission standard for two-wheelers, and it governs what comes out of the tailpipe — not how the silencer sounds. A compliant motorcycle is fitted with a catalytic converter and an ECU calibration tuned to the stock exhaust system’s back-pressure.

Replacing the silencer changes that back-pressure, which is why compliance for an aftermarket part depends on the specific bike model, the stock system it’s replacing, and local enforcement — it is not a blanket yes or no across every silencer we make.
